CHAPTER 35

Hasnain was standing by the window, fidgeting with his hands, unable to stand still. He took his gun out, checked the magazine, then slapped it back in. He didn’t turn the safety catch off, Arla noticed. She didn’t recognise the make of the gun, but it wasn’t a Glock. It was a slimmer, lighter weapon.

After his initial bravado, Hasnain seemed a different person. He was little more than a teenager, Arla realised. He was putting on an act in front of Bilal. Hasnain folded his skinny arms across his chest, and looked around like he was trapped.

“You’ll get locked up for life. Or worse, wind up dead,” Arla said softly. “Either way, you’re not getting out of here.”

Hasnain’s eyes were wide as saucers. “Shut up,” he snarled. He moved further away, to the end of the room. He peered through the broken door, which now had a chair against it to stop anyone opening it easily.

At least one more man had joined them. He came into the room and spoke to Bilal in a hushed voice, then they left together, leaving her alone with Hasnain. She didn’t hear any more gunfire. She still didn’t understand where Raymond and Gordon were. The sinking feeling in her heart told her they were dead. But the last she recalled seeing them was going down to the basement. If they hadn’t come up… unless somehow, the terrorists found their way down there.

At least Harry was still outside. She hoped he was, anyway. He was the only person now to raise the alarm. Meanwhile, she had to get out of her predicament. She wasn’t sure how, but she had to try. Bilal wouldn’t hesitate to kill her if she couldn’t get out of the cuffs.

“What they told you is not right. They’re lying, trying to get you to do their dirty work,” she said. “Look, Hasnain, I know you’re not like them.” He looked at her at the mention of his name. She searched her mind for titbits that might make him relate to her.

“Islam forbids you to hurt women and children, right?” Arla vaguely recalled reading that somewhere. It was a shot in the dark, but it had the desired effect. Hasnain went perfectly still and his eyes narrowed.

“So why did Bilal ask you to torture me? Doesn’t that go against everything you know?”

Hasnain breathed heavily. “You’re not a part of this gang, I know that,” Arla said softly. “Look, Muslims from the Headington mosque told us the names of the troublemakers. What does that tell you?”

Hasnain remained silent so Arla continued. “It means these terrorists have no religion. They just have their own agenda. They told you lies, Hasnain. Look around you. Is there a war going on? No, there isn’t. Don’t believe them, Hasnain.”

She folded her knees beneath her, then pushed her back to the wall. With difficulty, she tried to stand. Hasnain rushed forward. He had a wild look in his eyes. He pulled out the gun and released the safety catch.
